Nebo Peak Lightning Abort

Nebo Peak Lightning Abort

With the family still out of town I took advantage of the open Saturday to try to summit Mount Nebo. After waiting out some hail in the car at the parking lot, I took off. Perfect temps, but the clouds looked ominous. Sure enough, right as I got to ridge overlooking Utah Valley to the West thunder started banging and a really strong cold wind picked up. Looking west towards the approaching storm I was right on the edge of it. There was a chance it would swing south of me, but there was a chance it would hit me on the exposed ridge to the summit. I don’t mess with lighting, especially on ridges. Some people coming off the ridge said they could feel electricity crackling around them and in their fingertips – so I think I made a smart choice to bail. Looking back up as I ran back to the car and drove off…I think I would have been ok. I think the storm swung pretty far south – but it was better to play it safe. Nebo’s not going anywhere. I’ll be back.
