I am a historian, writer, and professor.  Until recently, I thought I hated running.

I have always been active, mountain biking, lap swimming, snowboarding, etc… but traditionally running has not been in the mix. Hence, it has been somewhat of a surprise that over the past couple years, I have somehow found myself attempting to become a runner.

Having recently moved to Utah, along the Wasatch Front, this running thing has gone from occasional folly to regular concern as I discovered the joy of TRAIL running.

Now I’m hooked.

This blog chronicles the journey.

It begins with a series of attempts to “get into” running and features one constant frustration: just as I start enjoying it, I get overenthusiastic, run farther or harder than my body is ready for, and get injured.  Time and time again.  Very frustrating.  But, I’m slowly learning.  I wish someone would sat me down and explained all of the tricks that I have slowly been learning along the way.  Oh well – better late than never.

This blog chronicles my attempts.  I’m including injury reports and updates, pictures, gear reviews, etc…

Enjoy.

Also, I run a music blog, Desert Island Mixtapes.

  1. Hi! I just read your race report on Bryce Canyon 50K…I am thinking about doing this for my 1st 50K as well. Would you mind if I emailed you some questions? Thanks!
